How crowded is the Kumano Kodo?

The Kumano Kodo is far less crowded than Japan's major destinations, but crowding varies sharply by section and season. 

Peak periods are cherry blossom season (early to mid-April) and autumn (September through November), when accommodation books out up to 6 months ahead. 

During those months on the Nakahechi route you’ll see lots of other tourists hiking the trails and around your accommodations. It’s not crowded but you certainly won’t be alone. If you really want to enjoy solitude, we recommend visiting the Ohechi or Iseji routes.

Seasons with fewer people: December through February bring colder weather and no crowds. June is the wettest month, and July through August or September bring heat and humidity that make full days difficult.
