Is the Kumano Kodo worth visiting?

The Kumano Kodo suits travelers who want depth over sightseeing volume. It's a UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage network in Wakayama, 2.5 hours from Osaka, receiving many fewer annual visitors than golden triangle cities like Kyoto.

What you get: 3 Grand Shrines, over 300 km of waymarked pilgrimage trail across 5 routes, forest walking on stone paths in continuous use since the 10th century, and the only dual-pilgrim status in the world, shared with the Camino de Santiago.

What you don't get: dense sightseeing, English-language convenience, or fast movement between sites. Days are 13–20 km with 700–900 m of ascent, and moving between the three shrines takes two to three days on foot, or a full day by bus and train.

It rewards patience rather than efficiency. Travelers who leave satisfied are usually the ones who are able to spend 5 or more days, including travel to and from Osaka.
