Koyasan: Buddhist Meditation & Temple Stay Trip Extension

This Koyasan experience is offered as an optional extension to any of our small group tours, allowing you to continue your journey deeper into Japan’s spiritual heart after the group itinerary concludes. It can also be arranged as a private Custom Tour for those who wish to experience Koyasan independently, with personalized pacing and guidance.

Discover the spiritual birthplace and modern-day headquarters of Shingon Buddhism in Koyasan, a secluded mountaintop sanctuary where cedar forests, temple bells, and centuries of ritual shape daily life. You’ll explore the heart of this UNESCO-listed sacred site, walk quiet forest paths, and gain insight into the traditions of Shingon Buddhism with knowledgeable local guidance.

Experience monastic culture firsthand: participate in morning prayers, savor shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), and stay overnight in a traditional temple lodging. Evenings are calm and contemplative, with time to wander lantern-lit paths, join a meditation practice, and reflect in one of Japan’s most atmospheric sacred landscapes.

At the center of the journey is Okunoin, Japan's most sacred cemetery, Koyasan’s most revered site, and the resting place of Kobo Daishi, founder of Shingon Buddhism. Visiting this vast forest cemetery offers a profound glimpse into Japan’s spiritual worldview and remains one of the most meaningful pilgrimage experiences in the country.

This extension can be added to the end of any small group tour
or booked separately as a private Custom Tour

Witness the procession of the monks feeding of Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, who is believed to be in eternal meditation.

After lunch, explore the Danjo Garan temple complex (ceremonial heart of Koyasan) and the famed rock garden of Kongobu-ji (head temple of Shingon Buddhism).

Afternoon free time options include shakyo (sutra-copying), a meditation session, browsing Reihokan Museum (treasures of esoteric Buddhist art), or exploring on your own. Temple dinner in the evening.
