Japanese Calligraphy Experience in Shingu
The Living Art of Japanese Calligraphy
Japanese calligraphy is more than writing. Each brushstroke reflects balance, rhythm, and the state of mind of the artist at that moment. For centuries, the practice of 書道 (shodō, “the way of writing”) has been both an art form and a path of personal cultivation.
In the coastal town of Shingu, one of the gateways to the sacred Kumano region, calligrapher Kosetsu Kito continues this tradition through her work and teaching. A prefecturally registered artist and seal engraver, she leads the Kosetsu Shoin calligraphy studio, where students from early childhood to adulthood study the expressive power of brush and ink.
This intimate cultural experience invites visitors to step inside that world. After a short introduction to the history and philosophy of Japanese calligraphy, you will learn how to hold the brush, prepare ink, and practice the fundamental strokes that give life to each character. Under Kito Sensei’s guidance, you will then create your own calligraphy work to take home as a lasting reminder of your time in Japan.
More than a lesson, this is a quiet moment of cultural exchange—an opportunity to slow down, focus the mind, and experience one of Japan’s most enduring artistic traditions in the place where it continues to live and evolve.
Experience includes English interpretation by Kumano Adventures staff or by one of our local guides.
