Wings Across the Ocean: The Butterfly Migration Hike

A Seasonal Miracle on Mt. Nishiyama

Every year, a quiet miracle unfolds in the skies above the Kii Peninsula. The Asagimadara (Chestnut Tiger Butterfly), a delicate creature with translucent blue wings, descends upon Mt. Nishiyama during its incredible journey. These butterflies are known to migrate over 2,000 kilometers across the ocean, traveling between Japan, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia.

This limited-edition eco-tour offers more than just a hike; it invites you to become part of their story. Depending on the season, you will participate in a hands-on conservation experience—either planting the flowers that fuel their journey or "marking" (tagging) butterflies to help researchers track their migration routes.

The adventure combines this unique citizen science with a scenic low-mountain hike, a panoramic bento lunch at the summit, and a rewarding soak in a seaside hot spring to finish the day.

Itinerary

1. Meeting & Approach (Flexible Start 8:30 - 10 a.m.) Meet your guide at Nishi-Gobo Station. After a briefing, we begin our journey. We will walk through the local countryside for approximately 60 minutes to reach the Mt. Nishiyama trailhead, warming up our legs as we leave the town behind.

2. Hiking Mt. Nishiyama (90 mins) We ascend the "Western Mountain" (Nishiyama). The trail is a "low mountain" hike, making it accessible yet rewarding, surrounded by rich flora.

3. The Butterfly Experience (60 mins) Upon reaching the habitat area, we engage in the season's special activity:

  • Spring (Apr): Planting Fujibakama (Thoroughwort), the butterfly's favorite nectar plant.

  • Autumn (Oct-Nov): The "Marking" experience. Under guidance, you will learn to gently mark the wings of the butterflies to help track their migration path.

4. Summit Lunch (40 mins) We enjoy a locally sourced bento box at the summit. Relax and take in the view while butterflies dance on the breeze around you.

5. Descent & Hot Spring (Approx. 55 mins) We descend the mountain (approx. 40 mins) to the Mihama area. A private hire car will meet us here for a short transfer to Michishio no Yu.

6. Onsen Recovery & Conclusion Enjoy a 60-minute soak in the hot spring baths. Afterward, the private car will return you to Nishi-Gobo Station, where the tour concludes.
